Attention Deficit Hyper Activity Disorder
What is ADHD?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention regulation, impulse control, activity level, and executive functioning. While it was once thought of primarily as a childhood disorder marked by hyperactivity, we now understand that ADHD persists into adulthood and looks different in everyone.
There are different presentations of ADHD (inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and combined type). Some individuals appear restless and impulsive, while others struggle more with focus, organization, and follow-through.
Individuals with ADHD tend to process information, motivation, time, and emotion differently than neurotypical individuals. Differences may include: difficulty sustaining attention on tasks that are not highly stimulating, frequent procrastination, losing track of time, disorganization, forgetfulness, impulsive decisions, emotional reactivity, sensitivity to rejection, trouble starting or completing tasks, and feeling overwhelmed by multi-step demands.
At the same time, ADHD is often associated with strengths such as creativity, curiosity, humor, high energy, problem-solving ability, empathy, and the capacity to hyperfocus on areas of deep interest. With understanding and the right supports, individuals with ADHD can build lives that feel purposeful, balanced, and successful.
